Medical

Deep rooted poverty means individuals and families cannot pay for day-to-day medication or life-saving treatments.

We believe families shouldn’t be sacrificing meals to pay for medical care. Medical care which we can provide but only with your continued help.

We are the only hospital in Sierra Leone that provides free treatment to anyone who walks through our doors. We have treated over 92,000 patients completely free of charge so far.

Providing free quality care

We aim to better people’s lives and develop a self-supportive structure. We actively work to provide free education and medical support in those areas where it is scarce or virtually non-existent. We also travel to villages nearby to facilitate preventative health care. This includes programs such as self-management of chronic diseases, female genital mutilation (FGM), mental health, teenage pregnancy and also health and hygiene around the home, You can read more about areas of our outreach work below.

Surgeries and treatments

Below is a summary of the number of procedures we have carried out, completely free of charge:

Malnutrition

We are what we eat and unfortunately some children in Yonibana find themselves deprived of this basic human right out of poverty and lack of resources. Our comprehensive malnourishment programme is funded by you and executed by our trained local clinicians based on World Health Organisation guidance. We have treated over 1,464 children for malnourishment.

We assess the type and severity of malnourishment, treat any underlying infections and dehydration and provide nutrition rich supplementation free of cost. These children are followed up and monitored regularly to ensure they begin and then continue to thrive.

Our impact

Malaria

Malaria is endemic in Sierra Leone. The country’s entire population is at risk of the disease and it is one of Sierra Leone’s leading causes of death and illness. Malaria is the reason behind nearly four in ten hospital consultations countrywide and children under five are at high risk. Our hospital offers free care and microscopy testing with trained lab staff.

We also provide inpatient management of severe cases and outpatient pharmaceutical management with the support of the Government of Sierra Leone. To address this holistically, our outreach programme hosts public forums to spread awareness of prevention strategies and offer interventions such as mosquito nets to bring about a more systemic change from the grass roots. We work in support of the World Health Organisation’s goal to eradicate malaria by 2050.

Minor injuries

Yonibana Sai Hospital offers a one stop shop solution to minor injuries in the region for cuts, burns, sprains, limb ulcers etc. There is a significant burden of this in our region and Sierra Leone widely due to the physical nature of agricultural and other economic activity. Inadequate hygiene practices lead to infections and significant deterioration from a minor wound. Our trained clinicians treat, dress and follow up and spread insights into wound hygiene to the local communities free of charge.
