dental teaching

We will be the first dental teaching hospital in Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone has a growing population of

8.4 million people

There is no dental school in the country.
The Ministry of Health Report (September 2021) stated that there were only ten dentists working in the country. It is therefore extremely challenging for the local population to access dental care.

Preventable conditions constantly become life-threatening, and add to the ever-increasing challenges as a result of poverty, malnutrition, lack of infrastructure and ecological decline.

What we aim to build

We want to construct and maintain a dental school in one of the most deprived regions in the world. The current hospital will expand into the Yonibana Sai University Hospital.

To meet the urgent needs of the surrounding communities, we are aiming to build:

  • 10 dental surgeries
  • Phantom-head room (teaching tool) with 15 mobile phantom-head units
  • Operating theatre
  • X-ray room
  • Decontamination rooms
  • Dental library
  • Computer equipment for students
  • Lecture theatre/seminar rooms
  • Dental equipment to carry out treatment
  • Reception area
  • Toilets

Since 2009, we have been striving to address these challenges by providing basic dental and optical care, by a team of local and international volunteers and healthcare professionals, who provide their services free of charge, including paying for their own accommodation, food and travel costs.
To date we have carried out

12,483 dental

Our aims

  • Bettering people’s lives through free oral health care and treatments
  • Develop a training programme for dentistry, hygiene therapy and dental nursing
  • Create self-sustaining dental centre serving the needs of the population
  • Work in partnership with dental professionals from all over the world

Let’s make a difference together

We believe we can make this happen with you by our side. The initial goal is to raise approximately £850,000 to construct the dental teaching hospital.
